People & Lifestyle

Point Loma is steeped in historical significance, as it was the first place in California visited by European explorers in the 16th century. With its exceptional natural beauty, chic cultural attractions, and great restaurants, Point Loma has long been regarded as one of San Diego’s most affluent and desirable communities.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

Point Loma is dotted with outstanding restaurants serving delectable fresh seafood caught in its surrounding waters. Mitch’s Seafood at Fisherman’s Landing is particularly popular with Point Loma locals. You can expect to wait for a table, but their delicious fish tacos and crab cakes will more than make it worth your while. A short walk around America’s Cup Harbor from Mitch’s, Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern offers artisanal takes on classic American cuisine and stunning marina views from its outdoor patio.

Head in the opposite direction around the harbor and stop by Point Loma Seafoods for a quick lunch or pick up some fish to-go. Many shops and restaurants are concentrated on Midway Drive, which is close to Pechanga Arena towards Point Loma’s northeast. Pechanga Arena has been voted one of the best concert venues in the county.

Adjacent to it is the Sports Arena Square shopping center, which features big-box retailers such as Home Depot, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Ralphs, and Target. Kanda Thai Cuisine is a great little Thai restaurant that serves authentic Thai dishes—the food runs a little on the spicy side, so we like to order a “3!” Tom Ham’s Lighthouse on Harbor Island is another must-visit, combining what many consider to be San Diego’s best seafood dishes with spectacular views.

If you venture over to Shelter Island, try Island Prime or Coasterra. Both restaurants serve incredible internationally-influenced land and seafood dishes while providing magnificent views across the water to San Diego.

Things to Do

Located at Point Loma peninsula’s southernmost tip, Cabrillo National Monument is a historical landmark recognizing the arrival of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo’s 1542 expedition. Cabrillo was the first European explorer to set foot in modern-day California, and Point Loma is thus recognized as the place where California began. The Monument offers great year-round views over the ocean and the bay and a nearby whale-watching station is a popular spot for viewing the gray whale migration between December and March.

The surrounding area also contains many of Point Loma’s protected tide pools, which are teeming with marine life. Liberty Station is a converted naval center that features many shops, restaurants, and art galleries. Liberty Station NTC Park is a picturesque green space located on a harbor inlet adjacent to Liberty Station.

Located near Fisherman’s Wharf, Pearl Hotel is regarded as one of the best hotels in San Diego. Amenities include a craft cocktail bar, saltwater swimming pool, and an excellent restaurant that uses locally sourced ingredients. Kellogg Beach is a sleepy local beach looking out to Shelter Island that is a great place to relax and paddleboard.

Schools

Public schools within Point Loma are operated by the San Diego Unified School District. Highlights include:

  • Point Loma High School, Public, 9-12

  • Point Loma Nazarene, Private, Christian liberal arts college
